Lake Shasta Caverns is built around a Shasta County cave trip defined by the approach as much as the cave itself, with a catamaran crossing and bus climb before the guided limestone tour even starts.
Most visitors stop in Lakehead for fuel, food, or lodging before or after visiting Lake Shasta Caverns.
The History & Geology
The standard Lake Shasta Caverns visit is a two-hour tour that combines a boat ride across the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake, a scenic bus ride, and a guided cave tour.
The route includes more than 600 stairs, does not require crawling or climbing, and follows private company transport because visitors cannot drive directly to the cave.
The cave stays about 58 degrees with 90 to 95 percent humidity, which makes the feel warmer than the raw number suggests.
